The Nainital Zoo is a high-elevation zoo situated on the Sher Ka Danda slope at a level of 2,100m or 6900 ft above ocean level. The zoo is spread over a green area of 4.6 hectares or 11 sections of land. It was laid out in 1984 and was opened to guests in the year 1995. The zoo was authoritatively named as Pt. Govind Ballabh Gasp High Elevation Zoo in 2002. This zoo is one of the three high elevation zoos in India, the other two being in Sikkim and Darjeeling.
